History

Ain Dubai, initially called the Dubai Eye or Dubai-I, was officially announced in February 2013. Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Starneth Engineering were chosen as the lead contractors for design and construction, with KCI responsible for the complete wheel structure, including installation engineering. Construction began in May 2015, with an initial completion target of early to mid-2019. However, delays pushed the planned opening to 20 October 2020, to align with Expo 2020, but the event was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ain Dubai eventually opened on 21 October 2021.

Ain Dubai stands 250 meters (820 feet) tall, with each supporting leg measuring 126 meters (413 feet). The wheel is equipped with 48 capsules, each capable of holding 40 people, bringing its total capacity to 1,750 riders at once.

Design

Engineered for durability, the wheel is designed to last 60 years or 300,000 rotations. Constructed with 11,200 tonnes of steel, it uses 33% more steel than was required to build the Eiffel Tower.
